I was pregnant with my 3rd baby. I had planned home births with my first two babies and was not able to have one either time, so I was super excited to make this third time the charm with my baby boy.
Early Thursday morning before labor day weekend (the irony, I know..), I felt a small trickle of fluid and thought my water broke. I was just past 37 weeks and really ready to meet my boy. After a full day of sporadic, inconsistent contractions, we decided we needed to do something to help my labor along. That Friday afternoon, I went to acupuncture and then came home and drank castor oil as per Kathy’s guidance. Not the most fun thing I’ve ever done, but by 8pm that night something worked because I was in full blown labor. The way Kathy, Alison and Kara moved around and worked together like a well oiled machine was very reassuring.
My water fully broke around 3am Sat morning and by 4:20 I was holding my baby. Throughout the laboring process I felt very comfortable and well taken care of. We were checking the baby every few minutes to make sure he was happy as I moved around the room and made myself as comfortable as possible. It was great to hop into my own bed and snuggle up with our little guy minutes after he was born.
My favorite part of Luca’s birth was right after it was over, for obvious reasons, but also holding your baby after all that work is truly like winning an epic sporting event. I would totally do it again.
Many thanks to my amazing team of midwives who were calm and confidant from day 1 of my pregnancy. They really set the mark high when it comes to prenatal, postnatal and delivery care.
